Our aims

We established JDM Woodland Management Ltd as a small family business in 2017 located in Crieff, central Scotland. We aim to deliver species diverse, high quality woodlands for our clients across Scotland. We design and personally manage every woodland creation scheme from start to end and are completely involved in the day-to-day management of every scheme we take on.

OUR PEOPLE

We are a forester and ecologist with a long-standing passion for woodlands, particularly native woodlands.

During our professional careers, we have worked on over 50 woodland creation schemes from 6 ha to over 1000 ha and managed the planting of over 15 million trees in Scotland.

OUR PROMISE

Our business focus is solely upon woodland creation. By keeping our family business small, costs are kept lower for our clients and a high quality of work is maintained.

We only undertake a limited amount of work each planting season so that we can manage every site ourselves.

John Mulgrew

FORESTER

John has over 20 years of forest management experience gained with Forest Enterprise (Forestry Commission Scotland) in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. His life-long passion is native woodlands, preferring to spend spare time and holidays in the woodlands of Glen Affric or Rannoch, further afield in Scandinavian pine and spruce forests, or north American redwoods.

Having managed planting in excess of 15 million trees throughout his career, John managed planting of ‘The Great Trossachs Forest’ on behalf of FCS, establishing over 900 hectares of native woodland (2.5 million trees) on remote hill ground previously grazed by sheep. The successful establishment of this woodland earned a ‘Scotland’s Finest Woodlands’ award in 2014, and it now forms part of Scotland’s newest National Nature Reserve (NNR).

John is the main point of contact with our clients. He conducts site surveys, designs our woodland design and controls operational delivery, contractor management and health and safety on site.

MEET THE TEAM

Dr Jenny Mulgrew

Ecologist

Jenny is an ecologist with over 15 years of experience, mostly gained in commercial forestry, ecological research and working for NGOs. Her passion for woodlands really took off after working as an ecologist in the native Caledonian pinewoods at Mar Lodge Estate in The Cairngorms, which led to a PhD on black grouse in relation to the management of commercial forests.

Jenny worked as Regional Ecologist to Tilhill Forestry for 7 years, working on over 30 applications for large commercial woodland creation schemes (100 ha to over 1500 ha), training staff on environmental protection, writing EIAs and environmental guidance, and was an internal UK Woodland Assurance Scheme (UKWAS) auditor. She is a Member of CIEEM (Chartered Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management) and Secretary of the Central Scotland Black Grouse Group.

Jenny conducts ecological surveys and looks for ways to maximise benefits to biodiversity within each scheme. She leads on due diligence checks and writes grant funding applications. She also manages quality control, checking sites are planted and maintained as required.
